Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how learners explore, understand, and prepare for STEM careers across K–16 education. From personalized recommendations to career advising systems, AI is increasingly embedded in the educational infrastructure shaping students’ pathways and aspirations.

While these technologies offer new opportunities to broaden access and support exploration, they also raise critical questions about bias, over-reliance, and developmental appropriateness.

This workshop brings together researchers, educators, practitioners, and policymakers to examine the design, implementation, and governance of AI in STEM career development. Our goal is to foster dialogue on responsible, equitable, and developmentally grounded uses of AI at scale.

Workshop Goal

This workshop aims to advance a shared understanding of how artificial intelligence can responsibly support STEM career development across K–16 education. Bringing together researchers, educators, designers, and policymakers, the workshop will examine how AI systems shape career readiness, decision-making, and access to opportunities.

Participants will identify design principles, governance strategies, and research gaps to ensure AI expands, rather than constrains, learners’ pathways. Through collaborative discussions and structured activities, the workshop seeks to produce actionable frameworks that align AI with developmental needs, preserve human agency, and promote equitable outcomes in STEM career exploration at scale.
